*Due to weather, illness and scheduling conflicts, the youth sports practice area groundbreaking ceremony has been postponed to 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, at the same location, 2929 Riverside Golf Club Road.
The City of San Angelo will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovation of the Youth Sports Practice Area, formerly the 29th Street Sports Complex, at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at 2929 Riverside Golf Club Road.
Developed in the 1970s, the complex has long been home to the San Angelo Girls Fast Pitch Association and Northern Little League. A 2010 sales tax referendum allocated funds for a new facility, but the project never came to fruition. Growing demand for practice space made this renovation crucial.
The project includes:
- Main baseball field rehabilitation
- Prefabricated restrooms
- New practice area along the river
- Pedestrian bridge to Kirby Park (pending approval from the Army Corps of Engineers)
- Upgrades to bleachers, walking trails, irrigation and parking
The project’s final cost is $1.461 million, within the approved $1.5 million budget, excluding the pedestrian bridge. Staff is working to secure approval for the bridge and additional funding if needed.
